Star House above the Breaking Waves explores the entanglement of ecological, historical, and economic narratives within a fictional coastal Namkong City by the Southern Sea in the 2040s. Through a fragmented narrative framed by a hacked AI archivist, the work juxtaposes ancient myths, tales of piracy, history of real estate development, and the conditions of climate change to depict a complex multigenerational relationship with the ocean. Tracing the lineage of the Chinese Gods of Fire and the South Sea, a Qing-era pirate turned scholar, a 20th-century Hong Kong real estate developer, and a near future when various factions explore different approaches to floating lives on the ocean, the work examines how systems of power and resistance shape our past, present, and speculative future as we imagine alternative ways of habiting the planet.
